This retreat is the second of four parts, creating the most comprehensive teachings about Mind Training available anywhere in the West. It is not necessary to attend all four parts to benefit from these teachings, and you do not need to attend a prior retreat to understand the material for a future retreat, but we encourage you to attend as many as you can to experience this rare opportunity!
Compiled in the fifteenth century, this collection of meditations is the earliest anthology of mind training. We will meditate and give teaching on the highlights from 43 individual texts, This retreat will focus upon the teachings from:
- How Atisha Relinquished the Kingdom of This Life and Sought Liberation
- Atisha's Bodhisattva Jewel Garland (980-1054)
- The Wheel of Sharp Weapons
- The Peacocks Neutralizing of Poison
- Mahayana Purification of Grudges
- A Teaching of Taking Afflictions Onto the Path
- Two Yogini's Admonition to Atisha to Train His Mind: A Source of Inspiration on the Path
The meditations for the retreat will focus on Tonglen and the Four Immeasurables.
The practice of mind training is based on the essential teachings of impermanence, compassion, and the exchange of self and other (also known as Tonglen) that the 11th century master Atisha, who learned from his Indonesian master Serlingpa, brought to Tibet from India. The Mind Training teachings are a source of inspiration and guidance shared by masters of all Tibetan traditions. The translations we will be using are from Geshe Thubten Jinpa, the primary translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the past twenty years. For the first time, this early collection of instructions of the great Kadampa masters has been translated. The clarity and raw power of these 1000 year old teachings are astonishingly fresh, whether studied completely, or practiced at random for inspiring verses on the heart of Buddhist practice.
