When it comes to applying the teachings to our own personal experience, the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism places more emphasis on the oral instructions - the pithy key advice called dam ngag; these instructions are often found in the dohas, or songs of spiritual realization of our sublime masters, rather than scholarly treatises.
On this particular occassion, I shall attempt to clarify one of the most important works of this genre - the King of Samadhi Sutra. This sutra, is the basis of the primary approach to training in samadhi used at the major spiritual establishments of the Kagyu lineage. There the main meditation is on the nature of Mahamudra. This particular sutra ia always used as a support for personal practice. This sutra was requested to be given by the Buddha from his disciple, whose name translates as the bodhisattva Youthful Moonlight, it contains the intent of the Mahamudra practice. When our great lineage master Gampopa expounded the Mahamudra system, he used just this sutra. Therefore, it is considered extremely important for people who wish to understand and practice Mahamudra to study, reflect upon, and understand the meaning of the King of Samadhi Sutra.
When His Holiness the XVI Karmapa established the Nalanda Shedra (College) at Rumtek Monastery, he personally selected the treatises to be used for the study and practice of our lineage. His Holiness included the King of Samadhi Sutra in this curriculum as the supportive scripture for Mahamudra. This discourse was given by the Buddha at Vulture Peak Mountain near Rajgir, in North Eastern India approximately 2550 years ago.
The retreat will consist of about half discourse and half practice on the discourse. I look forward to sharing this beautiful teaching with all of our friends, near and far. Thank you for all of your efforts!
With Love and Palms Together,
Chokyi Dhakpa
