Tantra evokes a sense of mystery, the esoteric inner workings of Buddhism. It is frequently associated with sex, with death, mysterious rituals undertaken at night by initiates, terrifying gods and goddesses as well as breathtakingly beautiful mandalas and deeply moving chants intoned by brocade-draped Tibetan monks to the syncopated rhythms of bells, drums, and mudras.
What is all this about, and where is its place in the understanding and practice of Buddhism? In this retreat, “The Psychology of Buddhist Tantra,” Gen-la will clarify the nature of tantric practice without reducing this ancient path of realization to a set of merely rational beliefs, excercises, and techniques. Tantra will come alive and its vast importance appreciated and will be made, most importantly, understandable.
We will not seek to explain away the undeniably evocative sometimes darkly potent language and imagery of Tantra, but to recognize them as transformative symbols of the rich complexity of our own inner lives. In contrast to the conventional approaches of religion, Tantra does not attempt to soothe the turmoil of existence with consoling promises of heaven and salvation. The tantric practitioner chooses to confront the bewildering and chaotic forces of fear, aggression, desire, and pride, and to work with them in such a way that they are channeled into creative expression, loving relationships, and wisely engaged forms of life.
This retreat is open to anyone, but would best be suited toward those who have a prior background in Mahayana Buddhism. Plenty of time will be made for questions and answers. For those who have been curious about the inner meaning of Dharma practice this retreat will lay bare the mystery, symbolism and superstitions. For those considering doing extended retreat this practice is essential.
This retreat will be done using our satellite center broadcast technology, so local groups will be hosting this retreat in various locations around the world. Please contact Dave Rodenbaugh to find out more about a community near you, or how to host your own retreat gathering!
