Gen-la Chokyi Dhakpa

In this retreat we will gain attention or Mindfulness of our Feelings. Quite literally, we will know how we feel and gain awareness with immediacy so that the light of awareness will be present before the onset of our habitual reactions, projections, or justifications in regard to how one feels. This retreat does not include emotions per se (which is the subject of our next retreat), but their precursor, bodily and mental feelings, here we are concerned with gaining attention of, "bare feelings," before they become complex emotional structures.

Undertaken in this way, contemplation of feelings will reveal the surprising degree to which one's attitudes and reactions are based on the initial affective input provided by feelings themselves.

The systematic development of this immediate knowing will also strengthen one's more intuitive modes of perception, in the sense of the ability to get a feel for a situation or another person. This ability offers a helpful additional source of information in everyday life, complementing the information gained through more rational modes of observation.

Mindfulness of breathing, or Anapanasati, will be the medium used for exploration of feelings in this retreat, just as the Buddha recommended more than 2550 years ago. Compassion toward oneslf and others will be emphasized throughout the weekend.

This retreat will be done using our satellite center broadcast technology, so local groups will be hosting this retreat in various locations around the world. Please contact Dave Rodenbaugh to find out more about a community near you, or how to host your own retreat gathering!
